Absorbent cotton grades explained: USP absorbency, pleated vs rolled, and what to specify
"Absorbent cotton" sounds like a commodity, but quality and price vary widely with fibre, processing and format. Specifying it properly protects your margin and your brand. Here is what actually matters.
Absorbency is the headline spec
Pharmacopoeias (the Mexican Pharmacopoeia, USP and EP) define a sinking-time and water-holding test for absorbent cotton. Genuine pharmacopoeia-grade cotton sinks within seconds and holds many times its weight in water. Cheaper "cosmetic" cotton blended with synthetic fibre will not pass — always specify pharmacopoeia/USP-grade absorbency on the purchase order.
Bleaching, purity and lint
Medical cotton is scoured and bleached to remove waxes and impurities, giving consistent whiteness and wettability. Two further specs matter: low lint/shedding (loose fibres left on the skin or wound) and the absence of foreign matter. For wound contact, lower lint is better.
Format: pleated, rolled or cotton balls
- Pleated cotton (zig-zag folded into a sachet) is the retail and pharmacy standard — easy to tear off a layer. Sold in weights from a few grams to 300 g.
- Rolled cotton (a continuous roll, e.g. 500 g) suits clinics and dispensaries that cut to need.
- Cotton balls / torundas are pre-formed for antisepsis and injection prep, sold loose by weight.
