Sterile vs non-sterile gauze, tissue types and X-ray detectable: how to choose

Dry cut cotton gauze manufactured by Quirmex

Gauze is the highest-volume wound-care item, and the one buyers most often under-specify. Get four variables right — sterility, tissue type, weave and detectability — and you will order exactly what your market needs.

Sterile vs non-sterile

Sterile gauze is sterilised and individually sealed, ready to apply to a wound — required for direct wound dressing and surgery. Non-sterile gauze ships in bulk for clinics that sterilise in-house, for cleaning and padding, and for kit assembly. Most distributors carry both; the price and packaging differ significantly.

Tissue type (thread count)

Gauze is graded by tissue type — a thread-count class (commonly Type I through Type VIII). A higher type number means a denser weave: Type VII is finer and denser than Type III. Denser gauze sheds less lint and feels smoother; more open gauze maximises absorbency and breathability. Always state the tissue type you require.

Open vs closed weave

Closed (tight) weave reduces loose fibres for sensitive wounds; open weave wicks fluid and dries faster. Many ranges offer the same size in both, as Quirmex does for 10×10 cm pads.

X-ray detectable

For the operating room, surgical sponges and compresses must be X-ray detectable: a radiopaque thread is woven in so any retained item shows on X-ray. This is mandatory for laparotomy and abdominal compresses and a key spec to confirm.

Ply, size and folding

Pads are specified by size (7.5×5 cm, 10×10 cm, 10×20 cm), number of plies/folds, and edge finish. For private label, also fix pad count per pouch and pouches per box.

Frequently asked questions

What tissue type is 'standard' gauze?

There is no single standard — it depends on use. Type III is common for general dressing; finer Type VII is chosen where low lint matters. State the type explicitly on your order.

When do I need X-ray detectable gauze?

For any gauze used inside the body during surgery — laparotomy and abdominal compresses especially — so retained items can be found on X-ray.

Can one size come sterile and non-sterile?

Yes. The same 10×10 cm pad is offered sterile (sealed) for wound contact and non-sterile (bulk) for cleaning and in-house sterilisation.
